As part of Universiti Sultan Sharif Ali's (UNISSA) academic growth in providing its students with broader knowledge, the Rector yesterday disclosed plans to have in place an infrastructure that will be used in the study of astronomy Syar'ie.
In an interview with the Bulletin yesterday, Dr Haji Serbini Haji Matahir revealed that the country "Inshya Allah will have its own observatory" with the consent of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
"Among the Asean countries, Brunei is yet to have this (facility)."
Construction for the building to house the observatory has been set for 2013 and will take approximately 18 months to be completed.
The potential location, he added, would be in the vicinity of Universiti Brunei Darussalam atop one of the two hilly sites that have been preserved upon request by UNISSA.
Along with the envisioned observatory, UNISSA will also include an educational programme that will study the Islamic science of space and will be made as an optional subject for its students as a means to attract candidates for research.
Producing work based on findings, he added, "is important", as this will help in placing UNISSA on the world map and improve its international rankings towards, hopefully, being recognised as one of the top Islamic universities in the world.
