The Origin of Islamic Calendar


Below is an excerpt on the history of the origin of islamic calendar. The purely lunar calendar is known as qamariya (arabic qamar means the moon). It is also known as hijri calendar from the arabic word hegira, which means emmigration. The Prophet Muhammad pbuh, did not order anything regarding islamic calendar as an administrative or civil tools for time reckoning. He only put an example on how the beginning of (certain) islamic months be ascertained.

At the time of Khulafaur Rasyidun (The Guided Leaders), administrative system of Islamic monarch was trimmed little by little., according to the current administrative system around the world., as long as the system did not break the shari’a. The correspondences had been done repeatedly. But the problem was that the muslims did not have a stable counting of the years. Hence, sometimes each of them had different naming of the years. This happened during the time of caliph Abu Bakr -may Allah be pleased with him- , and several years of the reign of Umar -may Allah be pleased with him- . Thus we know the term ‘year of Tha’un’, since in that year, the epidemic of Tha’un occurred and spread to various regions.

Until finally, at the third year of Umar’s reign, there came a letter from Abu Musa Al Ash’ari -may Allah be pleased with him- a companion whom was appointed as the governor of Bashra, which content was: “Indeed, the letters from The Leader of the believers (Umar) often comes to us. But we don’t know, when shall we carry out the instructions inside it. Once we got a letter written in the month Sha’ban, but we did not know whether it was the present Sha’ban or the past year.”

When the letter reached him, Umar Ibn Khattab -may Allah be pleased with him- gathered the senior companions at once to discuss about the issue. This meeting took place in 20th of Jumadil Akhir, year 17 of Hijra. They agreed about the urgency of date establishment process as the reference of Islamic calendar, started from the establishment of the first year. Some suggested the year of birth of the Prophet -may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him- as the first year, the other suggested the year when he was assigned as the messenger of Allah, others suggested to use the Roman or Persian calendar, and some other suggestions being raised.

Finally, a decision was made based on the opinion of Ali Ibn Abi Thalib -may Allah be pleased with him- who suggested the year of the moving (hijra) of the Prophet -may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him- from Mecca to Medina, as the first year. Whereas the decision of establishment of the first month was taken from the opinion of Uthman Ibn Affan -may Allah be pleased with him-, who proposed to make the month Muharram as the first month in Islam, because such month is the beginning of year in the Arabic calendars before Islam.

Beside that, Muharram is one of the four holy months and the muslims would be just finishing their pilgrimage at that time. The establishment of Muharram as the first month of Hijra calendar was also based on the assumption that at such month, the Prophet -may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him- had not accomplished the hijra and he reached Medina before the next year Muharram. He started the hijra at the end of month Shafar, and he reached the gate of Medina on Monday, 8th Of Rabiul Awal, then he entered Medina on Friday, 12th of Rabiul Awal. The establishment of the beginning of Hijra calendar coincided the Friday, 16th of July, 622 AD.

From the origin of it’s naming, this calendar is well known by “qamaria/moon calendar”, because the principle or the basis of establishment of this calendar was the rotating cycle of the moon. This calendar is also named as Hijra calendar, due to the history of it’s establishment was related to the hijra of the Prophet -may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him- from Mecca to Medina.

Hari Raya Aidiladha jatuh pada 16 Oktober 2013

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Sabtu, 5 Oktober. - Pengumuman mengenai hasil merukyah awal bulan Zulhijjah 1434 Hijriah dari tempat-tempat yang ditentukan di seluruh negara diumumkan secara langsung ke seluruh negara melalui Radio Televisyen Brunei.

Oleh itu, umat Islam di negara ini akan menyambut Hari Raya Aidiladha pada Hari Rabu, 10 Zulhijjah 1434 Hijriah bersamaan 16 Oktober 2013 Masihi berikutan anak bulan Zulhijjah 1434 Hijriah tidak sabit kelihatan setelah dilakukan rukyah lewat petang tadi.

Anak bulan Zulhijjah telah digenapkan menjadi 30 hari dan permulaan awal bulan Zulhijjah 1434 Hijriah telah jatuh pada Hari Isnin, 1 Zulhijjah 1434 Hijriah bersamaan 7 Oktober 2013 Masihi.

Sehubungan itu, Sembahyang Sunat Hari Raya Aidiladha akan diadakan di seluruh masjid, surau-surau dan balai-balai ibadat di semua daerah bermula pada jam 7.30 pagi dan mengerjakan ibadah qurban sejurus selepas Solat Sunat Hari Raya Aidiladha dan hari-hari Tasyriq 11, 12 dan 13 Zulhijjah 1434 Hijriah.
Sementara itu, Kementerian Hal Ehwal Ugama (KHEU) juga mengadakan Majlis Keugamaan bagi Menunggu Hasil Merukyah Awal Bulan Zulhijjah 1434 Hijriah yang berlangsung di Dewan Teratai, Tingkat 5, kementerian berkenaan, di sini.

Hadir bagi menyerikan majlis tersebut, Menteri Hal Ehwal Ugama, Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Dr. Haji Mohammad bin Pengiran Haji Abdul Rahman.

Majlis dimulakan dengan bacaan ayat-ayat suci Al-Qur'an oleh Awang Md. Fikri bin Haji Metussin dan diikuti dengan persembahan Tausyeh yang dibawakan oleh Belia Masjid Kampung Sungai Hanching.

Doa Selamat pula dibacakan oleh Pegawai dari Jabatan Hal Ehwal Masjid (JHEM), KHEU, Pengiran Haji Md. Salleh bin Pengiran Haji Zakaria.

Sementara itu azan Fardu Maghrib dikumandangkan oleh Pegawai dari JHEM, KHEU, Awang Haji Isa bin Haji Saban dan seterusnya Solat Fardu Maghrib Berjemaah diimamkan oleh Imam Masjid Mohamed Bolkiah Kampung Serusop, Awang Haji Muslim bin Haji Abdul Razak.

Juga hadir menyerikan majlis itu ialah Timbalan Menteri Hal Ehwal Ugama, Yang Mulia Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, Setiausaha Tetap, Pemangku Timbalan Setiausaha Tetap dan para jemputan khas serta Pegawai-Pegawai Kanan kementerian tersebut.

Masyarakat ISLAM di Menara BURJ KHALIFA Berbuka Puasa LEWAT - ULAMA

Bagi masyarakat Islam yang tinggal di menara tertinggi di dunia perlu menunggu lebih lama untuk waktu berbuka puasa pada bulan Ramadan yang mulia ini.

Mohammed al-Qubaisi, ulama Islam tersohor di Dubai berkata, bahawa penduduk Burj Khalifa yang tinggal dari aras 80 ke atas perlu menunggu dua minit tambahan untuk berbuka puasa dan sahur, manakala mereka yang tinggal dari aras 150 ke atas perlu menunggu tiga minit tambahan kerana mereka masih dapat melihat matahari yang terbenam lebih lama daripada masyarakat yang tinggal di bawah.

Menara yang mempunyai ketinggian 828m ini mempunyai 160 tingkat yang didiami.

Al-Qubaisi berkata perintah dan amalan serupa juga bagi umat Islam yang di dalam perjalanan di dalam kapal terbang, dan juga bagi masyarakat yang hidup di pergunungan di mana berbuka puasa mereka selepas mereka yang tinggal pada ketinggian yang lebih rendah.

Penentuan Awal Syawwal 1434H

Ijtima' / Iqtiran (Moon Conjuntion)  Insya-Allah akan berlaku pada hari Rabu, 29 Ramadhan 1434H bersamaan 7 Ogos 2013 pada jam 5:51 pagi. Merukyah bagi penentuan awal Syawwal 1434H  akan berlaku pada petang hari berkenaan. Umur hilal (anak bulan) pada waktu tenggelam matahari ialah 12 jam 45 minit dan hilal akan tenggelam 10 minit selepas matahari tenggelam. Hilal hanya berada di atas ufuk selama 10 minit sahaja selepas matahari tenggelam. Kejelasan hilal juga hanya 0.3%. Dalam keadaan fizikal sedemikian maka hilal Syawwal sukar untuk dilihat.

Oleh itu, awal Syawwal 1434H di Negara Brunei Darussalam berkemungkinan akan jatuh pada hari Juma'at, 9 Ogos 2013M setelah menggenapkan Ramadhan 1434H menjadi 30 hari. Manakala Malaysia akan menyambut awal Syawwal 1434 pada hari Khamis, 8 Ogos 2013M berdasarkan syarat MABIMS: hilal berumur tidak kurang 8 jam ketika matahari tenggelam.

Pengalaman saksikan lintasan Planet Zuhrah

 Planet Zuhrah (tompok hitam), yang merupakan planet kedua terdekat dengan matahari dan kedua terkecil dalam definisi Sistem Suria terbaru kelihatan melakukan lintasan di hadapan cakera matahari kelmarin. Fenomena yang jarang-jarang berlaku itu telah menarik minat para ahli astronomi serata dunia dan orang ramai untuk menyaksikan kejadian yang mungkin merupakan kesempatan terakhir kita melihatnya sepanjang hayat. - AFP
 
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, 6 Jun - Satu pengalaman yang tidak mungkin dapat dilupakan dalam hidup kerana berpeluang menyaksikan lintasan Planet Zuhrah di depan cakera Matahari ketika berada tepat di antara Bumi dan Matahari di negara ini pada pagi hingga tengah hari ini, tatkala menurut perkiraan pakar astronomi, fenomena seumpamanya hanya akan berlaku pada Disember 2117 dan Disember 2125.

Zuhrah mula dapat dilihat melintasi depan cakera Matahari dari Bumi di Negara ini pada pukul 6.13 pagi dan terus dapat dilihat sehinggalah ia mula keluar dari kawasan antara Bumi dan Matahari pada pukul 12.45 tengah hari ini.

Memandangkan melihat matahari tanpa penapis cahaya boleh membahayakan mata dan boleh menyebabkan kebutaan, satu-satunya pilihan terbaik bagi rakyat dan penduduk di negara ini untuk tidak ketinggalan menyaksikan fenomena unik yang kebetulan berlaku dalam jangka hayat manusia ketika ini berkenaan ialah mencerap bersama Bahagian Geodetik, Jabatan Ukur di Pusat Tingkatan Enam (PTE Katok).

Bahagian berkenaan telah menyediakan tiga teleskop besar jenis optik yang dipasang alat penapis cahaya matahari khusus dengan dua daripadanya berjenama Celestron dan satu lagi Meade LX200GPS, sambil beberapa pegawai dan kakitangannya berada dekat dengan teleskop-teleskop berkenaan, bersedia menjawab pertanyaan orang ramai mengenai fenomena unik itu.

Sementara itu Persatuan Astronomi Brunei Darussalam (PABD) menyediakan sebuah teleskop kecil yang disambungkan kepada kamera DSLR yang membolehkan orang ramai menyaksikan fenomena lintasan berkenaan melalui skrin kamera berkenaan.

Bagi mereka yang ingin melihat fenomena unik yang jarang-jarang berlaku dapat dilihat dari Bumi itu dalam bentuk yang lebih besar, Bahagian Geodetik turut menyambungkan salah satu teleskop besarnya ke Projektor (OHP) yang memaparkan imej lintasan itu ke atas dinding di salah sebuah bilik persidangan di PTE Katok berkenaan.

Menariknya lagi, orang ramai turut berpeluang mendengarkan penerangan lebih lengkap mengenai fenomena berkenaan dari Ketua Unit Astronomi, Hala Kiblat, Hidrografi, Jabatan Ukur, Haji Julaihi Haji Lamat.

Antara lain, beliau menjelaskan bahawa fenomena itu memberi peluang berharga buat para pakar astronomi untuk membuat perkiraan lebih tepat mengenai planet khususnya Planet Zuhrah berkenaan.

Lintasan Zuhrah berkenaan berlaku dalam corak yang berulang setiap 243 tahun, dengan transit berlaku dua kali dalam tempoh lapan tahun, dan dipisahkan oleh tempoh masa yang agak panjang iaitu 121.5 dan 105.5 tahun.

Kali terakhir ia boleh dilihat di Negara ini adalah pada lapan tahun yang lalu iaitu 2004, dan hanya akan berlaku dan boleh dilihat dari Negara ini pada Disember 2117 nanti iaitu lebih kurang 105.5 tahun dari sekarang.

Brunei to witness Venus transit across the sun today

FROM 6.13am to 12.45pm today, Brunei will be seeing an astronomical phenomenon that will only occur again in 2117.

To commemorate the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of witnessing the transit of Venus, the Survey Department under the Ministry of Development will be hosting a showcase of telescopic sightings, screens and briefings on the phenomenon today at the Katok Sixth Form Centre (PTE Katok).

A transit of Venus takes place when the planet Venus passes directly between the sun and Earth, becoming visible against the solar disk.

Astronomy Unit Hj Julaini Hj Lamat said what made the event special was that it would occur on various gap years that could range from eight to 200 years.

He noted that the orbit of Venus changes at certain periods, which would lead the planet within telescopic visibility of the Earth.

Hj Julaini said that the planet will be seen as a small dot when seen through enhanced vision equipment. 

He advised caution, however, for the spectators of the event.

"For those using their own telescopes or binoculars, it is important that they have appropriate filters because if they don't then they could burn their eyes due to the enhancement of light," he said. 

"It is fine if you look at it normally with eye protection but through telescopes, people must be careful."

The viewing at PTE Katok will touch on the educational aspect of the rare moment in history. Those interested in knowing more and witnessing the transit of Venus are welcome to join the showcase at PTE Katok today from 6.13am to 12.45pm, or the entire duration that Venus could be seen traversing the sun from the Sultanate.

Meanwhile, Radion Televisyen Brunei last night reported that the Survey Department also observed a partial lunar eclipse from the Sultan Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Mosque in the capital on Monday night. 

The eclipse was visible at 7.03pm when parts of the moon's surfaced appeared in darkness. The phenomenon occurs when the earth's shadow is cast onto parts of the moon's surface. The Brunei Times

Venus transit chance to boost awareness on astronomy

THE Venus Transit provided the perfect opportunity for Astronomy enthusiasts to attract potential audiences into further developing their interest in the subject.

The Survey Department's commemoration of the once in a life time event yesterday at the Katok Sixth Form Centre (PTE Katok) drew a lot of public attention and provided the perfect opportunity for the Astronomy Unit to brief students about its role and duties.

Astronomy Unit head Hj Julaihi Hj Lamat who was tasked with supervising the event said that injecting an interest amongst the students was just as important as emphasising the unique opportunity they had in witnessing the Venus Transit which will next take place in 2117.

When asked more of how astronomy can be of relevance to the interest of students in their studies, HjJulaihi said there exists a relation between astronomy and the environment and how indepth research and analysis can assist them in understanding how global changes are affecting the Earth.

Other attractive topics he suggested students might be interested in were the universe's history, planet classification, theories of planetary alignment, the end of planets as well as the future of the Earth as our planet in this solar system.

Noticing the keen interest of students wanting to know more about astronomy, he highlighted a number of subjects they can focus on including physics, chemistry and biology with some elements of geography and mathematics.

In the future, Hj Julaihi hopes to establish an astronomy centre fully equipped with the tools and equipment needed in conducting research and studies open to those who are interested in the subject.

The Survey Department's set up yesterday consisted of three filtered telescopes used in viewing Venus' six hour transit from 6.13am to 12.45pm. One of the telescopes was wired into a system which was used as a live projection feed for the talk presented by Hj Julaihi and Geodetic Surveyor Md Hifney Hj AbdRahman at the institute's Gallery 2.

The talk covered the background of the astrological phenomenon as well as its scientific value in measuring the accurate distance between Earth and Venus. The two other telescopes were positioned at the institute's sports track and field where students could view the transit with their own eyes while learning more about the equipment used.
